Canine parvovirus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Parvo came through our dog kennels when 5 puppies were brought to me because their owner could not find them homes.

The puppies were 9 weeks old and should have had three shots at this age to guard against Parvo and Distemper, the puppies had be given no shots.
Within 2 days it was clear they all had Parvo.

There was a 1 year old Jack Russell Terrier / Beagle in the kennel next to them.

He had not been given any shots either.
He too became infected with Parvo.

I stayed 3 nights in my kennels giving them hourly shots, trying to get them all through it.

All 5 puppies made it; unfortunately the Jack Russell did not.

Parvo strikes fast and hard, a dog can die within hours of first showing signs of being sick. It takes round the clock care to even try to pull a dog through this, and even then, many will still die. It seems to me the symptoms are worse at night. On the night that the Jack Russell died, I held him and kept saying “buddy just hold on till morning, and I am sure you will make it.”  At first I was begging him to stay with me, then when it was in its final stages, I was begging him to just let go.

Parvo affects a dogs intestines. The dog will have diarrhea, possible vomiting, and possible anal bleeding.

I want to help educate people as to the importance of getting your dog its yearly shots. Everyone knows about Rabies, and because most people get their dogs rabies shots, Rabies is very rarely even heard of.

Most of the time when you get your dog its Rabies shot, the vet gives them the Parvo and Distemper shot also, but it is important to check with your vet to make sure.
If you get your dog a three year rabies vaccination, it is important to still take them yearly for their Parvo and Distemper shot.

Most people are unaware of the Parvo disease, and how horrible it is. It is a very common disease and extremely contagious. If a dog with Parvo defecates in your yard and your dog smells it and has not been vaccinated, your dog can get Parvo. Without quick medical treatment, there is about a 91% death rate. Please click the link below to find out more about Parvo, and please please get your dog its yearly vaccination.

Big Black Dog Syndrome

Did you know black dogs are the hardest dogs to find homes for.

One problem shelters are fighting to overcome is what they term "Big Black Dog Syndroms"

Big black dogs (BBDs) are consistently the hardest dogs to place — even if they’re friendly, well trained, and in perfect health.

This may be due to a number of factors, including fear stigma against certain breed types, attraction to ads and the fact that black dogs do not photograph as well as lighter coated ones, and the fact that black dogs are often portrayed as aggressive in film and on television.

Organizations have started campaigns to educate the public about BBD syndrome. If you are considering adopting a dog, or cat please give special thought to the big black ones. You may find a best friend that you would have missed had your eyes not been opened.

Why Spay Or Nueter

By making sure that your pet cannot have puppies, or kittens, you'll have peace of mind that his or her offspring won't be euthanized in an animal shelter.

Many people are surprised to learn that nationwide more than 3 million cats and dogs are euthanized every year in shelters because there are more dogs and cats entering shelters than there are people willing to provide them with loving care.

Even if you do find homes for your pet's puppies or kittens that means there are fewer homes available to take in other pets from shelters. Spay/neuter is the only permanent, 100% effective method of birth control for dogs and cats.

Average number of litters a fertile cat can produce in one year: 3

Average number of kittens in a feline litter: 4-6

Average number of litters a fertile dog can produce in one year: 2

Average number of puppies in a canine litter: 6-10

Q: How many kittens can a cat have in a year?

A: WAY TOO MANY!   Please have your cats spayed or neutered. There are way too many kittens in shelters each year that are not adopted and are put to sleep.
